Yamaaki – 'Shosen Juudou' - Akiji Kataoka, Tokoname, Japan.
An early 16.7cm nanban style pot, handmade by the founder of the Yamaaki kiln, Akiji Kataoka, potter name: 'Juudou', (and later Shosen).
Juudou founded the kiln in the 1920's and the Yamaaki kiln was probably the most well-known of the Tokoname kilns. Juudou Shosen passed away 35 years ago, in 1990, and the kiln ceased production in 2012.
This beautiful example has a rugged and aged aesthetic which is suggestive of Juudou's earlier work. The dark brown clay has reddish tones and the thick rugged rim, which add to the aged feel.
A beautifully crafted and very collectable piece, in excellent condition.
Stamped and signed by the artist - reads: 十王堂 (Juudou).
External measurements (max): 16.7cm x 4.5cm
Made by: Sadamitsu Kataoka, 'Koshosen', 'Yamaaki', Tokoname, Japan.
