Wajaku – Ichihashi Wajaku - Japan.
A rare glazed shohin rectangle by one of Japan's most revered shohin pot makers.
Ichihashi Wajaku is famous for his top quality, mostly unglazed shohin and mame pots, almost all made by the kurinuki technique of hand carving the entire body from a solid block of clay. Wajaku is celebrated as one of the most proficient at this kurinuki technique, which very few have been able to master. The result is a stronger, more resilient pot with greater structural integrity and finesse.
Glazed pots by this artist are known also for their rarity, and although this pot is not stamped, the many 'signatures' of Wajaku's work are all present (far more accurate for ID than a stamp that can be faked). Anyone familiar with Wajaku's work will see this as obviously the master's work, and having collected many Wajaku pots for over a decade, I guarantee the pot's authenticity.
Made in the style of 'Shokodo', with incised corners, cloud style feet and a slight lip to the rim, the pot is finished in a stunning clean yellow glaze, adorned with a subtle crackle effect. Photographs show the pot with and without the flash. The true colour is similar to the more vibrant yellow.
Stamped by the artist. (covered in glaze)
