Alex & the EBPC Potters!
Suzuki Syuzan, Japan. (1928-1988)
A rare and quite special nanban style pot, handmade by one of Japan's most celebrated deceased artists, the great Suzuki Syuzan.
Syuzan, born in 1928, worked as a banker until 1971, when he quit to become a full-time pottery maker. He sadly only lived another 17 years, passing away in 1988. Syuzan admired the aesthetics of C18th & C19th Chinese pottery and so his unique style aimed to emulate and pay homeage to these antique pots. Unlike most, Syuzan only produced fully handmade wares, and his works are considered high-quality enough that it is common to see Syuzan pots at world leading exhibitions including the Kokufu and Gafu-ten.
This example has (rarer) glazed highlights in dark amber - subtle, earthy and very complimentary to the clay. The glaze adds a richness and a hint of amber/green/brown to the brown clay finish. A beautifully crafted and very collectable piece. The pot is developing a nice patina and is in excellent condition.
Stamped by the artist - (famous 'kettle shaped' stamp.) reads: 舟山 (Syuzan).
External measurements (max): 30.2cm x 5.5cm
Made by: Suzuki Syuzan, Japan.
