A tall Yamagata-ishi, (mountain stone) in striking Aki-ishi red and white, with bespoke ceramic Daiza, from the private collection of the cherished late bonsai ceramics artist, Derek Aspinall.

The stone is a tall Aki-ishi, or red stone with powerful movement and varying snow cover. The Yamagata-ishi is a popular form of suiseki with collectors, and this stone represents one large distant mountain.

The stone has diverse tones the surface has intricate detailing. The base was cut flat and Derek Aspinall created a custom-made ceramic Daiza, which follows the curves of the stone. The Daiza has a raised lip detail, brown finish to the platform, and cream sides. It was made by Derek Aspinall and bear's the artist's mark. The Daiza has minor damage to one foot. The Daiza is stamped with the artist's mark.

External measurements: 12cm (l) x 10cm (w) x 16cm (h).

Daiza (Ceramic base) measurements: 14cm (l) x 13cm (w) x 1.7cm (h).

This stone was a part of the late Derek Aspinall's private collection, and is being sold on behalf of his family.

* - Derek Aspinall was one of Europe's pioneering bonsai potters in the 1980's , and his works continued to be highly prized throughout his career. Aspinall unfortunately passed away over 20 years ago, however Aspinall pots are now some of the most collectable of European bonsai pots, and it is an honour to offer these historic pieces.
