Sharaku 写楽, Japan
A magnificent double scalloped mokko style bonsai pot, made by the Masahiro Shimotori.
This fine example is a slightly larger mokko-shaped pot, with double scallop detail, dressed in a fantastic drippy Chicken-blood glaze. This stunning glaze has subtle black ‘veins’ in the deep blood red, and hints of blues and browns. Hand-signed by the artist.
External measurements: (Max) 19.5cm (length) x 16.2cm (width) x 5.5cm (height).
Made by: Masahiro Shimotori (Sharaku) 写楽, Japan.
Sharaku was born in 1940 and from 1997 was a student of the master of glazes; Bushuan (Shigeru Fukuda). He also studied in Guangdong / Canton province in South China several years later.
His pots are beautifully made with thin walls, true lines and curves, and superb glazes - although generally more reserved than his master Bushuan. These wonderful pieces perfectly suit the modern culture of bonsai, albeit largely based on traditional design.
