Senshu - Large vintage unglazed rectangle with excellent clay and superior design.
This masterful bonsai pot by Senshu, regarded as one of the greatest ever maker of unglazed bonsai pots, was made from Senshu's famous groggy Shidei purple clay. The pot has a bold presence, with flared walls, large curve-cut corners, and detailed panels in thin relief to each front. A thicker basal band in relief follows the contours of the curve-cut corners, as do the recessed feet.
This is a large piece by Senshu, who predominantly made smaller and medium sized pots. The pot surface was burnished smooth by the artist, encapsulating the texture of the groggy clay.
Born Ozawa Kazuo in 1930, Senshu was the only ever student of another great artist, master Suzuki Syuzan (1928-1988). His pots are Antique Chinese influenced and have a level of attention to detail rarely seen. Senshu retired in 2015, when aged 85 years of age, and his pots are highly prized.
The pot is excellent condition and has a nice covering of patina building up, emphasising the pot's age.
A high-quality piece for the serious collector. Stamped ’Senshu’.
External measurements: 39.2cm x 36cm x 10cm.
Please note: This pot is only available by way of 'collection by prior arrangement'. Please contact me before purchasing. Thank you, Alex
