Alex & the EBPC Potters!
Nakawatari, China
A commanding antique bonsai pot in a classic design for the era, with generous proportions and an exquisite Shudei clay that exudes patina.
This early Nakawatari piece was made from Shudei (vermillion clay) - an iron rich clay that antique Chinese pots are so revered for. The mineral rich clay has longer depleted, so potters have added colourants and additives to try to emulate this natural clay since.
At almost 40cm, the pot has a timeless shibui design, with inclined walls, incised corners, integrated incised feet, and a large drainage hole more typical of older pieces from the Kowatari (old crossing) period.
Nakawatari, or 'middle crossing' refers to antique Chinese bonsai pots imported from China to Japan between 1800 to 1911. Kowatari refers to those pieces imported into Japan pre-1800CE.
Condition: Excellent for the age, just a few minor chips, as highlighted in the images.
Maximum measurements (External): 39.2cm x 25.1cm x 10.3cm.
Nakawatari, China.
