Nakawatari Antique Chinese mokko.
An excellent example of an antique Chinese pot in a superb mokko form.
The pot was made in China between 120 - 150 years ago and was imported into Japan during the Nakawatari (middle crossing) period, which is where these antique pots get their name.
This piece has a lip to the rim, and a soft mokko form. To the underside is a carved foot ring in relief, with four inwardly curved feet, with a stepped design - a very nice feature. This is a remarkable example that could be easily used and well respected in any show worldwide, as well as being a serious collector’s piece.
The pot is in excellent condition, and has at some stage had one small gold repair (kintsugi) to the seam of one foot. There is no crack or repair to the other side of this foot, so whatever was repaired did not penetrate through. Possibly done for ‘wabi Sabi’ effect and to emphasise the beauty in the age of the piece.
The pot also has a much desired smooth, oily patination.
Nakawatari pots are increasingly collectible across the world.
