Matsushita ‘BONSAI’ – Japan
A high quality Nanban style pot from Tokoname artist Matsushita Bonsai, the brother of Reiho.
His kiln name, Bonsai, is a play on words; pronounced Bonsai, but the kanji are different from "Tree in a tray", it translates to "Mediocre Talent", a reference to the Wabi Sabi aesthetic of the Nanban style containers that are his specialty.
This is a really nice example, with groggy clay. Heavy, so that your taller bunjin won't blow over at the slightest gust. The subtle oxide glaze and what appear to be ash deposits, would suggest the pot may have been wood fired. This artist produces fewer one-off pieces than his brother Reiho, and his works are desirable to collectors as well as enthusiasts.
