Kinka ware - Pre-Yamaaki – 'Shosen', Akiji Kataoka, Tokoname, Japan.
A beautiful antique 38cm rectangle, handmade in the early 1920's by the founder of the Yamaaki kiln, (Akiji Kataoka, potter name: 'Shosen / Juudou'), before he started the Yamaaki kiln.
Shosen started the famous Yamaaki in the mid 1920's and passed away 35 years ago, in 1990. The Yamaaki kiln is probably the most well-known of the Tokoname kilns, and closed in 2012. Pots made before pre the Yamaaki kiln such as this one, are known as 'kinka ware'.
This fine example was made from a high quality Shidei purple clay mix, to this traditional rectangular design, with outwardly inclined walls and integrated feet. The pot has well placed drainage holes, including a large central hole, as can often be seen in Kowatari antique Chinese pots.
The pot has a beautiful aged aesthetic, which is further enhanced by the patina. With only minor foot dents as can be seen, the pot is in superb condition for its age. Highly collectable.
Stamped by the artist - reads: 金華造印 (Kinka Zo Inn / Kinka made stamp).
External measurements (max): 38cm x 26cm x 10cm
Made by: Akiji Kataoka (Pre-Yamaaki), Tokoname, Japan.
