KEIZAN - Sadao Hisada (deceased), Tokoname, Japan.

A beautifully crafted, unglazed oval in a refined banded design, handmade (believed to be in the 1970s), by the founder of the Keizan kiln, and teacher of the great Nakano Gyouzan.

This 57.2cm oval was made from a quality blend of Tokoname clays, with warm soft flecks of persimmon blended throughout the chocolate brown clay. Expertly formed to an elegant yet commanding form, the pot sits on recessed feet, and has relief banding to the body, which visually suggests a lower depth than it offers the tree. Over time a beautiful patina has developed.

Keizan Hisada, real name Sadao Hisada, born 1930, founded the Keizan kiln in 1951, and was one of Tokoname's earlier and most highly respected bonsai ceramists.
