#5 Heian Kouzan – The Razor / Old man Ko
There are 3 deceased Japanese potters, which are widely regarded as the best to ever have lived. These are Heian Tofukuji, Tsukinawa Yusen, and Heian Kouzan. This is made by the latter. Known as ‘The Razor’ due to his precision and meticulous build quality, as opposed to Tofukuji, who’s designs often displaying elements of wabi sabi.
Born in 1905, Heian Kouzan (not to be confused with Kosen) comes from a long line of Setopotters going back more than 12 generations. By 1918, at the age of 13, he was already making an income with Bonsai and pottery. By 1948, at the age of 33, he was famous. He passed away in 1990
Here is an opportunity to acquire a very useable and highly collectible kinyo glazed oval by the deceased master. 18cm in length and built to a refined deign, with basal band in relief and recessed feet. The glaze is a magnificent mottled kinyo.
Stamped by the master
