Heian Kosen – Studded oval in Pear skin clay!
A gorgeous studded oval, long time in my collection, by deceased Kyoto artist Heian Kosen. Born in 1933, Kosen was fascinated by Tofukuji and this can be seen in his work. He sadly passed away in 2014, and his pots have become increasingly sought after.
A deceased artist, whose works are now highly collectible, Kosen is famed for his superb glazes. Real name Yoshikazu Hashimoto, ‘Kosen’ was born in 1933 in Kyoto. He was self-taught and is another potter aspiring to the glazes of the great Heian Tofukuji. Originally he used a climbing kiln, until pollution control restrictions. He passed away in 2014.
This great piece is made from a pear skin clay, in chocolate brown, with lighter brown inclusions. The body is decorated in two rows of smaller studs and the pot sits on recessed feet and although it has some age, seems to never have been used. As new condition.
An excellent example of this popular artist’s work and homage to Tofukuji.
