Gramming Pot – Wood-fired 'kirinuki' pot.
A 'kirinuki' built rectangle, meaning the artist carved this entire pot from a single block of porcelain.
Porcelain is known as a difficult material to work with, and kirinuki is generally reserved for some of the greatest of Japanese potters (e.g. Wajaku, Fujikake Yuzan, Kamiya Ryuen).
This pot has a great design for small shohin, with good depth, delicate carved feet, and large lip to the rim. The magic comes with the natural glaze, to one side, the natural ash glaze is significant. The ash glaze has a subtle crackle and there are also beautiful ash deposits across the pot.
The wonderful warm colour variations and glaze effects are due to expert positioning and control of the wood fired kiln.
External measurements: 11.5cm (l) x 10.1cm (w) x 4cm (h).
