Alex & the EBPC Potters!
Juudou 十王道 Yamaaki 山秋 first generation. Tokoname, Japan.
An excellent and rare example of an exquisite textured rectangle by the famed Yamaaki kiln (opened by this artist in the 1920's and closed in 2011).
Made initially as a special order, this large-sized rectangle has a commanding yet refined form, inspired by the shape of even earlier Chinese Kowatari pots, yet with proportions much more useable for bonsai (not as thin and long as many Kowatari pots). The pot is made from 'Shidei', or 'purple mud', and has a slight curve to walls, which flare to a lip at the rim. The body of the pot is adorned with two horizontal folds, rock-like crevices, giving a degree of texture and ruggedness to the refined form. The pot sits on recessed block cut feet.
In excellent condition for a pot very close to 100 years old. Other than just one small chip to one foot, at the side of the pot, the pot is in remarkable condition. Stamped and hand-signed by the artist, with some additional text. Juudou is now long deceased and was one of Tokoname’s leading bonsai ceramists. His works are now increasingly collectible.
External measurements: (Max) 50cm (length) x 37.7cm (width) x 14.8cm (height).
